Travis Manion lived in the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria until age 10, when his family moved to Pennsylvania. As a 1st Lt. in the US Marine Corps, Travis deployed for a 2nd tour of duty in Iraq where he was killed by enemy fire while leading a counterattack against insurgents, and saving his wounded comrades.
Travis’ final words before deploying were “If Not Me, Then Who…”, and the TMF strives to maintain his legacy while encouraging others to “live with character and make an impact by serving others.” It aims to support veterans, first responders and their survivors, all while trying to strengthen communities. Whether it is organizing transition workshops for veterans, or supporting local youth, the Travis Manion Foundation is making a difference.
You can monitor all events on social media by using the hashtag #911HeroesRun or you can follow along with the Alexandria 9/11 Heroes Run on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
